Help with debts

Municipality has contacted

Sometimes the municipality offers you help with your financial situation without you registering for it. This way we can prevent early payment arrears from accumulating further and developing into debts. This is called early detection.

How does it work?

If you are in arrears in paying your rent, health insurance, energy or water, the municipality will receive this signal. Debt assistance offers help by contacting you. We will discuss the cause of the payment arrears with you and help you find a solution. The support is voluntary and can vary from one-off advice to a trajectory. We ensure that you receive the right help as quickly as possible. By starting the conversation in time, major financial problems can be prevented.

Is participation mandatory?

No. Participation is not mandatory. The goal is to help you. If you do not want to make use of this, you can indicate this when the help is offered.

Privacy

Early identification is a statutory task for municipalities in the context of the Municipal Debt Assistance Act (Wgs). National agreements have been made with the representative organizations and trade associations. The municipality of Tilburg has concluded an agreement with each party that submits payment arrears. Good agreements have been made about the exchange of data. It is done in a secure manner, only necessary data is shared and certain personal data are only visible to the employee who has been designated for early detection.

You can object to the data exchange with the organization that reported the payment arrears to us. You also choose whether or not you want to accept the help and whether or not to grant permission to share data with other authorities.

Temporary regulation of payment arrears signal

Signal mortgage arrears

From 1 January 2022, in addition to payment arrears of rent, health insurance, energy and water, the municipality will also receive data from three lenders: Aegon, Rabobank Group and Obvion. Since January 2024, Syntrus has been added as a fourth lender. This concerns mortgage arrears of homeowners.

What do we do and why?

If you are two months behind with your mortgage payments and you cannot reach an agreement with your lender, the municipality will contact you to offer help. The municipality wants to reach homeowners through early warning during the period from 2022 to 2025.

What data do we get?

Aegon, Rabobank Group, Obvion and Syntrus provide the following data to the municipality via a joint ICT environment:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Place of residence
  • Phone number
  • Amount of payment arrears

This data will be kept for 1 year.

Share with third parties

We do not share your data with others outside the Municipality of Tilburg. Only our own employees who deal with early detection can access your data.
