In the Netherlands, everyone pays tax on their wages, benefits or pension. Most people receive a letter from the Tax and Customs Administration.
I have received a letter from the tax authorities
You must file a tax return with the tax authorities every year. This means that you inform the tax authorities of how much income you received in that year. The tax authorities check whether the amount you paid in payroll tax and premiums (taxes) is correct.
Why do I have to report?
By filing a tax return, you will know whether you have paid too much or too little tax. You file a tax return before 1 May of the following year (for example 1 May 2025 for the year 2024). If this is not possible, ask the Tax Authorities for an extension.
How do I determine my income?
You will receive your annual statement from us in February. This will state your income for that year. Do you also have income from work? Then you will also receive an annual statement from your employer.
